Submission Guidelines
Fly in the Head is open year round to fiction and poetry submissions from past and current American University in Bulgaria students, faculty and staff. We also accept work from all writers who live, have lived, or have strong personal connections to the Balkan region. We consider the Balkans as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia. But hey, as we don’t really believe in borders, let’s throw in Turkey and any other nearby countries. We accept both unpublished flash fiction (200-1000 words) and longer works up to 5000 words. For poetry, we’ll look at poems up to 200 lines. On occasion we accept reprints. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please let us know immediately if your piece has landed elsewhere.
Don’t be afraid to deviate from the norm. We’re open to all types of fiction and poetry but we especially love work the leaps past arbitrary genre distinctions. We admire writing that bends, hybrids, transgresses and sticks in our heads. We’re not so big on maggots or pupae, but we dig a wide variety of flies.
