Fly in the Head hatched in 2004 as one of the first English language literary magazines in the Balkans.
Since then, it’s featured the creative buzz of students, staff and faculty from
the American University in Bulgaria and, on occasion,
other Balkan bugs. Outside insects have included Elizabeth Kostova, Robert Serban,
Dan Mircea Cipariu, and Nikolai Grozni, among others.
Why This Name?
Муха в главата (“fly in the head”) is a Bulgarian expression. It’s an idea that drones your brain.
It’s a relentless phantom that craves volition. An obsession.
Fly on the Web
In 2020, Fly in the Head officially migrated from print to the web. The flies still buzz. Only now it’s a digital hum.
The fly is published whenever damp matter provides the larvae with proper food.
